If you're like me, you don't like spending money on a car to then blend in.

I should clarify I'm not talking about going out and buying a Mitsubishi Galant just because its different. I'm referring to when you see two close to equal cars you would go for the less popular option. Is it the underdog appeal? Am I douche for wanting to stand out?

Getting off topic …. anyways which camp do you belong in?

Mustang owners need not reply (trollolol).

I buy what I like. I definitely went different with the Dart. For whatever reason, people would rather have subpar Corollas. And my engine/tranny combo is becoming increasingly rare.

That said, it'll probably get traded on a Mustang eventually.

I am, but that's what customization is for. I want a fiesta RS that I can then deck out in a rally tribute livery to the old escort rally cars. I figure no one will confuse their fiesta for mine in a parking lot.

I would say that Jalopnik/Oppo is so hipster about its choices that it has actually made them mainstream. (Caddy Wagon, Morgan 3 Wheeler, etc.)

I definitely have an underdog affinity. Or at least a need to not blend in. But at the same time, not be completely noticeable.

I have a Fiesta ST. It sort of looks like a regular Fiesta, but it's noticeably different. It's also silver, so you may not immediately see me coming from miles away.

I think I need a bit of flash and drama to my cars. Some nameless, intangible "it" factor that pushes the purchase over the edge aside from pure numbers.

Everyone likes BMWs and Porsches, and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They seem to be such a common choice when it comes to classics, be it original collector's items or platforms for tuning.

I'd much prefer an Alfa (even then, an Alfetta rather than the more popular Giulia), Jaguar, Maserati (not Ferrari) or a Triumph.

Well when it comes to the muscle era, I tend to prefer the non Chevy GM brands. I like muscle Chevy's, but there's something a bit nicer about a Cutlass Supreme SX or a Super Duty Pontiac.

As for new cars, I'll buy a Cadillac over its import competition. A small bit of that is hometown pride, a big part is I like Cadillac's styling, and another part of it is that there are too many sheep who blindly buy import luxury because they assume it is the best without even considering Cadillac. I don't want to be part of that herd.

Similarly, I don't care much for most exotics/supercars. Because those are the cars that people who know nothing about cars lust after for no reason other than flashiness. I'll take a sleeper any day.

Seriously though, FB love doesn't seem to be growing quite as fast as Nissan or Toyota. Perhaps it's because of the engine.

As an aside, is there anything more hipster-y and insider-y than referring to cars by their chassis codes and engines likewise? It's like telling everyone around you 'I know more than you.' That being said, I want an FD so bad I can taste it but would not turn down a S30 or SE3P.

"Miata" is not much of an answer for all kinds of people who don't really care about cars but instead are mostly concerned about other peoples's approbation. Yet it wasn't always that way; shortly after it came out Miatas were quite the rage amongst various classes of posers! air-headed sorority girls, "trophy wives," Silicon Valley strivers, etc., etc.

Now I don't know how to feel about that. On the one hand, posers, ptui . On the other hand, enough sales to convince the Mazda management, who, like every other major company's management, are basically disinterested in anything else besides their accountants's bottom line, to continue building this genuinely incredible car for the benefit of an insignificantly small market segment for the following twenty-five years.

LOL MAN I don't even know if there's anything else. The JDM world seems to clarify their cars by chassis code all the time besides the newbs. I don't mind it at all though. I'd do FD or FC all day or even s124A.

Hold on to that car if you can because that's a future classic.

And come on, let's be honest, most hipsters will ride something ugly or weird on purpose, your car is just plain beautiful, that makes you more an esthete than a hipster.
